Bowen wasn't ready for him

30th September 2002

Michael “just tell him I’m ready for him” Bowen as pulled out of October's Super-Middleweight Title challenge against Matthew Barney, leaving the way for the ex-Jamaican Olympic fighter Chris Nembhard to bid for the crown.

Since moving from Jamaica to Stratford, London, Chris Nembhard hasn't always had things his own way in the ring as he's adapted to the professional game. Now he's gained in experience and still carries a reputation for being "dangerous and difficult", reinforced by knocking down Brian Magee for the first time in his career.

According to promoter Lloyd Honeyghan, the Barney camp was initially less than enthusiastic about facing Nembhard in the ring. "It took a week to persuade them to fight Nembhard - the guy's a bit of an animal. The board was behind it and Barney's no chicken so it's all sorted now."

Barney’s manager, Eugene Malone , said “We’re looking for much bigger things than the southern title – we’re looking for a world title fight by the end of next year.”

The title fight takes place on the 20th October at the Elephant and Castle leisure centre with a full under card of bouts and a live concert by Boney-M (featuring original member, Maizie Williams) doors open at 5pm with the first bell an 6pm.

Other bouts planned for the evening include Matthew Barr, Calvin Stonestreet, Albie Hunt, Mickey (Young Gun) Coveney and Frances Doherty.

Tickets start at just £25, and are available at Lloyd Honeyghan's web site, www.theeyeofthetiger.com or The Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre (020-7582-5505) or Maloney's Fight Factory (020 7740 2876)
