Brown Girl in the (Boxing) Ring?

12th September 2002

The Eye of the Tiger Promotions/Lloyd Honeyghan, is hosting the Southern Area Super-Middleweight Title in October.

Mr Honeyghan, former world welterweight champion, is an original; a one-off; and he promises a title fight with a difference. As well as two of the area’s most interesting boxers, entertainment includes a live concert by supergroup Boney‑M, featuring their original member, Maizie Williams. And in another ‘first’, boxing fans will also be able to watch the fight over the Internet using new technology developed for The Eye of the Tiger.

On the 20th October at the Elephant and Castle leisure centre, the evening kicks off with supporting bouts from 6pm (doors open at 5pm). The title fight is between Matthew Barney “King of the Gypsies” from Southampton, challenged by Londoner Michael Bowen. Both boxers need to win.

Barney’s manager, Eugene Malone , said “We’re looking for much bigger things than the southern title – we’re looking for a world title fight by the end of next year.”

He added “Matthew Barney has a lot of followers, and Michael Bowen says he’s got a lot too so it should be a really good atmosphere on the night. I mean this seriously, it’s going to be a really good fight because both boys are up for it physically and mentally and they both need to win. It’s a good title fight that Lloyd’s put on.”

Bowen’s mentor, former World Featherweight Champion and man of few words Colin Macmillan let his protégé do the talking: “Just tell him I’m ready for him”.

Both fighters have recorded their views on video, which will shortly be available on Lloyd’s website, www.theeyeofthetiger.com. You can also to book and pay for tickets on-line – a first for any British boxing promoter. This is part of Lloyd Honeyghan’s major investment in Internet technology, which includes instant pay-per-view video delivery using a new system developed with Actinic, one of the leading names in e-commerce software.

Other bouts planned for the evening include Matthew Barr, Calvin Stonestreet, Albie Hunt, Mickey (Young Gun) Coveney and Frances Doherty. And then there’s the special guest appearance by Boney-M, featuring the original member Maizie Williams, who will be entertaining the crowd with a selection of their many classic hits.

In spite of the evening’s extra attractions, tickets are available from just £25.

Note for Editors:

A when Boney-M split in the mid-80s, a newer member formed another group under the Boney-M banner in Germany. To avoid legal complications it is most important to differentiate the two bands, so please use the phrase “Boney-M featuring Maizie Williams”
